Polygonum Cuspidatum: A Natural Cure

For thousands of years, people have used the natural essences of plants for their medicinal properties. Polygonum Cuspidatum is proving to be a possible treatment for many common ailments.
As humans spread into more and more natural habitats, plant species are being destroyed that could possibly serve as cures and treatments for a variety of disease conditions that afflict people all over the world. Fortunately, scientists have started to perform active laboratory research on the effects of different plants on mammals and humans in hopes of finding more cost effective, natural ways to help people. Polygonum Cuspidatum is a plant whose medicinal properties had not been discovered until recently.

What is it?

Polygonum Cuspidatum is also known as Japanese knotweed. For centuries the plant had been used solely as an ornamental garden addition. It arrived in the United States almost two hundred years ago for erosion control and decoration. The extensive root network it produces helps keeps soil in place. It is a flowering plant species which can grow in all types of soil. The plant can reach almost 10 feet tall and produces very large leaves in the shape of hearts. The healthy and aggressive roots of the knotweed are what contain the healing properties. The roots can be made into an extract which is used as a supplement in pill or liquid form.

Health Benefits

Like many herbs, there are benefits to humans using Polygonum Cuspidatum extract as a dietary supplement.  The root extract of the plant contains a natural substance called resveratrol. Some of the benefits of diets high in this substance include:
  • Reduction in total cholesterol levels as well as a reduction LDL (“bad”) cholesterol
  • Decreased risk of thrombosis
  • Decreased risk of heart disease and heart attacks
  • Natural antioxidant which helps keep cells protected from free radicals
  • May inhibit many types of cancer cells including stomach, breast, thyroid, and pancreatic
  • Decrease in blood sugar levels
Research is currently underway to verify the formulation of the compound and dosage of the compound which will be necessary to produce a multitude of desired human benefits. Beginning lab research shows that Polygonum Cuspidatum may have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-infective properties.
